Product Code: SP 1220 – Lobelya
Recommended Firing Range: 1200–1220°C
Form: Supplied as a liquid glaze in 175 g, 500 g, and 1000 g packages.
Application Characteristics
- Due to its chemical composition, this glaze has a natural tendency to develop crystalline effects. Depending on the application thickness, clay body, and firing schedule, it may produce irregular crystal formations. Its highly fluid nature becomes more pronounced as the glaze is applied more thickly. In single-coat applications, the glaze may or may not exhibit slight running, while multiple coats significantly increase its tendency to flow. When applied in a single coat—particularly if little or no flowing occurs—the crystals can become highly visible on the surface. The glaze produces effects ranging from cobalt blue to dark gray. Areas with dense crystal formation may also develop localized matte surfaces. In thicker applications, especially on vertical forms, the flowing glaze causes crystals to accumulate in the direction of the flow, creating a smoother cobalt-blue appearance compared to a single-coat application.
- The glaze is semi-opaque. Its opacity varies depending on the application thickness, the shape of the piece, and the degree of glaze flow during firing.
- Highly fluid within the recommended firing temperature range. Controlled application is recommended.
- This glaze is not acid-resistant; therefore, it is not recommended for contact with acidic foods.
- Does not contain toxic substances.
Application Methods
- For brush application, the recommended thickness is 1–3 coats.
- For spray or dipping applications, it is recommended to dilute the glaze with approximately 5–30% water to achieve the desired consistency.
- Recommended Baumé (Bé) range: 45–55.
Testing Recommendations
- For customers using our glazes for the first time, we recommend preparing test tiles using your own firing schedule and application method to evaluate the glaze’s performance. Testing on both vertical and horizontal forms will help you better understand its characteristics.
- The sample shown was applied over BNC 1200 White Porcelain Clay. Since the glaze exhibits areas of transparency, its color and artistic effects may vary when applied to colored clay bodies.
- When combining artistic glazes with other artistic or standard glaze series, we strongly recommend conducting test firings beforehand to avoid unexpected results.
Care and Cleaning
- Dishwasher use may expose the glaze surface to high-temperature chemical detergents, which can cause slight changes in the glaze’s appearance, including reduced gloss or alterations to its artistic effects over time.
Safety
- The use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is recommended during application.
- As glazes react to heat, keep them away from open flames and ignition sources during use.
- Children should use the product only under adult supervision.
Storage
- Store the product in a tightly sealed container away from direct sunlight.
- If the glaze begins to dry after prolonged storage, add a small amount of water, mix thoroughly, and strain before use.
- After opening, the application aids, stabilizers, and preservatives contained in the glaze may gradually lose effectiveness over time. Although this generally does not affect the fired result, it may reduce application performance, making the glaze more difficult to apply or causing surface cracking before firing. If you encounter such issues, please contact us for technical support.

- All ready to use glazes are available in 118 ml, 335 ml and 670 ml jars.
- Our glazes are formulated ready to use in liquid forms.
- It is recommended to apply by brush two to three even coats.
- For other application methods you can add 5 %- 10 % water for diluting.
- Before application, the glaze should be homogeneous.
- We suggest you to test glazes on tiles and later on make final applications.
